It brought together leading minds, experts and stakeholders in rare earths, recycling, and sustainable technology. Over three days, participants engaged in a series of workshops, technical sessions, and networking events designed to accelerate progress across the REMHub project’s ambitious work packages.
The event started with an external collaboration day on October 1st. The REMHub consortium visited the laboratories at Bovisa campus of Politecnico di Milano at the Department of Mechanical engineering. The morning project clustering session focused on future research challenges where twelve research and innovation projects presented their work on REE and PM research. Presentations were followed by sessions focused on dismantling, recycling, and standardization of permanent magnet devices. The day concluded with strategic discussions on REMHub’s objectives and industry challenges, followed by a networking session.
On October 2nd, the consortium meeting began with a welcome coffee in the Leonardo campus of Politecnico de Milano in the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering ”Giulio Natta”. The morning kicked off with a deep dive into WP3: Rare earths from side streams, where experts discussed strategies for extracting valuable materials from industrial by-products and waste streams. The WP update was followed by discussion on the importance of valorization of waste and the role of additional metals in the waste streams for making REE recovery economically feasible
After a short break, attention turned to WP7: Hub Concepting Workshop. This session, held in person, focused on shaping the future of the REMHub Digital Innovation Hub—a platform intended to connect technology providers and end users, fostering collaboration and scaling up innovative solutions. Consulting members had the chance to vote for their favourite value propositions among the ten identified Initial value propositions.
A working lunch provided time for informal discussions before the afternoon’s technical sessions resumed. In WP5: Rare earths for sustainable E-machine design & production magnet samples produced from controlled scrap were presented. Additionally, manufacturing techniques such as Binder Jetting, Directed Energy Deposition (DED), and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) were showcased. WP5 also explored the next-generation electric machines, with a focus on sustainability and efficiency. Initial concepts for digital twin process modelling and a magnet passport were introduced. WP2: Novel technologies for exploration & primary production of rare earths. Here, participants examined cutting-edge methods for sourcing rare earth elements, a critical step in building a resilient European supply chain.
The day concluded with WP8: Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation, where strategies for sharing project results and maximizing impact were discussed. This was followed by a workshop on identifying the market strategies for KERs.
On October 3rd, the morning started with WP1: Management & Coordination, M18 reporting, where the consortium reviewed progress, addressed challenges. The overall achivememnts and collaborations with various EU initiatives were discussed in detailsed. In addition, initial instructions for M18 periodic reporting were given to consortium participants
It was followed by a session on stakeholder engagement and ethics in association with WP6: Stakeholder engagement. This session underscored the importance of responsible innovation and transparent communication with all project stakeholders. After a coffee break, the technical spotlight returned with WP4: Recycling technologies for rare earths and valuable metals. Presenters shared advances in recycling processes, highlighting the project’s commitment to circular economy principles and described the design and realization of demonstrators that will be validated during the project. Partners presented the results while showcasing the magnets produced fully by recycled NdFeB material.
The REMHub M12 Consortium Meeting exemplified the spirit of European collaboration and innovation. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, the event advanced the project’s mission to build a sustainable, circular value chain for rare earth elements. The workshops, technical sessions, and social events fostered new partnerships and set the stage for continued progress in the months ahead.
REMHub consortium partners will continue collaborative discussions with PERMANET project funded by the same program of HaDEA on October 14th in Slovenia. In addition, some of the partners will contribute to the EIT Raw materials strategic impact group network event held October 29th to 30th in Stuttgart.
Feel free to contact our consortium members at the EU Raw Materials week in Brussels in November 2025.
We will provide an update on the EU project clustering session as well as Strategy and networking workshop here.
